COMPOUND WORDS IN CNN CELEBRITY ENTERTAINMENT NEWS : A MORPHOSEMANTIC STUDY
Abstrak
The goal of this research is to analyze and examine in detail the classification of compound words that appear in CNN celebrity entertainment news and their type of meanings. This study was assisted using descriptive analysis techniques and data collection carried out by non-participant observation. The data used was taken from the "Celebrity Entertainment" section of the official Cable News Network (CNN) website by analyzing all the news on the top page (latest news). The findings showed that there are three different categories of compound words: compound adjectives (50%) and compound nouns (25%) as well as compound verbs (25%) respectively. However, there are three different kinds of meaning: idiomatic meaning (17%), semi-idiomatic meaning (33%), and literal meaning (50%). Furthermore, it can be deduced that among compound nouns, literal meaning accounts for (50%) of all occurrences, followed by semi-idiomatic meaning, which accounts for (50%) of all occurrences but excludes idiomatic meaning. Additionally, literal meaning, which accounts for (100%) of all meanings in the category of compound verbs, is more common than idiomatic and semi-idiomatic meanings, which are rare. Lastly, In the category of compound adjectives, literal meanings make up (50%) of the meanings, followed by semi-idiomatic meanings at (25%), and idiomatic meanings at (25%).
